Images and Issues - Activity 3 Unsavoury types |
In this activity, you are asked to consider the effects of negative stereotyping by first going with it and then challenging it. You will have the opportunity to imagine other people's perspectives and, through role play, to express views by writing to the press. Working in a group: The article 'Not in my back yard' appeared in a local newspaper. It is the report of a public meeting held in the small town of Stalbridge to discuss the planning proposal for a housing development in the town. Read the article. Now imagine that Mr Batty-Smith, having found the outcome of the meeting unsatisfactory, has invited the two hundred residents who backed him there to attend another meeting to decide what to do next. You are one of those people. Choose a role for yourself - decide your age, gender, occupation, family situation and your particular concern about the planned development. Spend a few minutes, in role, discussing the issue with your neighbours. The invitation to Mr Batty-Smith's meeting came through your letterbox this morning. Read it before setting off for the meeting. Continuing in role, attend the meeting and work through the agenda proposed. Working on your own: This second meeting has also been reported in the local press. The people described below, who also live in the area, have all read that report. Take on a new role by choosing one of these and write a letter to the same newspaper, giving your response to the views of the Stalbridge residents and the implications of their plan of action.
